Beauty Out of Brokenness : Week 7, Devotional 2

Scripture

2 Samuel 11:1-27

Bathsheba’s story is not an easy one to read or hear. It is full of pain, hurt, abuse, loss, and more. Yet, in the midst of all of that suffering and brokenness, there is redemption. This woman was taken, used, and abused by someone she should have been able to trust, her leader and her king. Many people don’t like to call this out for what it was—rape. David raped Bathsheba. Throughout those few verses in 2 Samuel 11:2-4, she didn’t have any control or power, only David did. He abused his power to take advantage of Bathsheba. What happened was not her fault.

After that, she became pregnant, which was essentially a death sentence for her, since her husband was away at war, so clearly not the father. Instead of owning up to what he did, David had her husband killed and then he married her. After she had her son, he died as well. So, she was raped by David, found out she was pregnant, her husband was killed, she had to marry the man who raped her, lost her son—all in about a year!

But her story didn’t end there. She became pregnant again and gave birth to a son, Solomon, who God chose to become the next King of Israel. Bathsheba is in the genealogy of Jesus and we see how God used her and her story and redeemed it. The fact that she is in the line of Jesus, even with all the shame and hurt she experienced, shows that God can use anyone. He redeemed her life by giving her another son, and generations later came the Savior of the world.

God transformed all of her pain and brokenness into something beautiful. Redemption. Maybe you have experienced something like Bathsheba. If so, I want you to know that I am sorry and it was not your fault. Also, God sees it and he will redeem it. No one is beyond God’s reach, no one is beyond redemption. Bring God your pain, your heart, your tears, your story, and see what he does with it. You may not see the redemption right away, but trust me, he is working. He is in the business of turning brokenness into beauty.

Where others bring pain, God brings healing. Where others break, God puts back together. Where others abandon, God rescues. Where you feel alone, God is right there with you. Spend some time bringing these things you are feeling, the ways you’ve been hurt, the brokenness in your heart, to God. He brings beauty out of brokenness.

Prayer

Thank you, Lord for the redemption you offer. You know my story, the pain I’ve felt, the ways I have been hurt, and you still love me. Thank you for seeing me and for loving me in the midst of my pain. When my pain makes it hard to see you, would you break through it to get to me. Turn my brokenness into beauty.

Questions/Journal Prompts

Feel free to use these questions as a guide as you journal and/or pray.

1. Can you relate to Bathsheba’s story? If so, how?

2. What are the ways you’ve been hurt in your life?

3. What are you feeling today? Share that with God.
